Sa Punta des Molí

Heritage

As you leave the centre of Sant Antoni, at the end of s’Arenal beach, you come to Sa Punta des Molí, an extremely historic place, well worth a visit, with its century old mill, a waterwheel, an exhibition centre, an old olive mill and a concert hall. It was inaugurated as a cultural centre in 1999 and the installation shows the way of life and traditions of the Pityusic islands up to the early 20th century, set in beautiful surroundings.

The Buenavista mill is the most iconic part of this historic site. Built in 1818, it was used by people from the outlying areas and as far away as Sant Agustí and Sant Josep who came to grind wheat, barley, oats and even peas and beans. The mill remained active for over 100 years until 1929.

Walter Benjamin, the famous German philosopher, is one of sa Punta’s most illustrious visitors, having lived in a house next to the mill in 1932. During his stay in Sant Antoni, he wrote several works such as “Spain 1932” and the “Ibiza Series” in which he reflects on his love and respect for the landscape, the way of life and the customs of the people. Close by the mill there is also a waterwheel which provides a constant supply of drinking water. It is also possible to visit the almazara or olive mill where olive oil was produced.

The exhibition centre, which is housed in a typical Ibizan style homestead, contains temporary exhibitions of local and foreign artists.
